- Types of Computers -
There are two main types of computer.
The PC (with Intel or AMD computer chips) and Apple computers (Macintosh).
We`ve all seen the TV adverts with PC Guy and Mac Guy. They represent both the Hardware_and_Software of the two main competing computer systems.
The PC Guy runs Microsoft Windows (Windows98, 2000, XP, Vista). The Mac Guy of course runs the Apple Mac operating system also known as OSX (currently Version 10).
So, chances are you are using Microsoft Windows. Why? Because Microsoft licensed Asian manufacturers of PC hardware to include Windows in the computers they were making. People bought very cheap Brand Name computers (Like Compaq, HP, Dell, Toshiba) that took away the technological leap of having to install an operating system.
The fact is, nothing could be more simple.
- Installing Operating Systems -
The nice thing about owning a PC is you have a choice of what to install on it.
But wait! Dont PCs just run Windows?
In fact there are several FREE operating systems that can be run on a PC.
A PC is a bunch of electronic parts that use either Intel or AMD chips. As well as running Windows they can use the Linux operating system or other similar products like FreeBSD.
Linux was originally designed in the early 90`s by Linus Torvalds, ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linus_Torvalds ) a computer student who wanted his own operating system rather than paying to buy someone elses. He licensed it under a free agreement which meant anyone could use it, modify it or add to it.
Linux comes in many different versions that have been developed by both volunteers and businesses. It is known as Open Source and the whole operating system and different versions are available for anyone to look at.
Just recently the Dell Corporation have started selling desktp and laptop computers with Linux pre-installed. This is following a trend where computer users are starting to realise the benefits of `Open Source` computing.
For further information on Linux I highly recommend visiting Ubuntu Linux http://www.ubuntu.com .
You should also look at Fedora from RedHat, considered to be one of the best Linux distributions.
